BAPTIST TABERNACLE.

ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL

Despite the inclemency cf the weather there was a good attendance last evening at the social gathering held to commemorate the second anniversary of the local Baptist Church. The chairman, the Rev. W. Lamb, in his opening remarks, regretted tfyat the state of the weather precluded many from being present, and then dealt briefly with the annual report. Special mention was made concerning the effort by which £4lO was raised in about four months for the Sunday School and Church extension. The thanks of the Church was expressed for the splendid work done by a number cf the men of the congregation by whose efforts on half holidays and evenings, preparatory work to the value of £6O was accomplished. Congratulatory addresses by Revs. J. A. Lochore and W. Grant and Adjutant Melksham were cordially received. Mr Lochire, in a stirring address on ‘'Baptist Traditions”, spoke of Baptist heroei past and present, and pointed out these and the Church have ever been in the forefront in the fight for religious and civil liberty, also for social reform. Mr Grant spoke of the Baptist Church as a great missionary church. During the evening a programme of musics i items was given and greatly appreciated. Songs were rendered by Misses Thompson and F. Glover and Mr Gray, pianoforte duets were played by Miss Townson and Mrs Brownlee, and Mr A. Rhinesmith was encored for a violin solo. A vote of thanks was moved to the ladies who had so ably assisted at the gathering, and the Rev. W. Lamb specially acknowledged the services of Mrs Brownlee. At the close a dainty supper was served by the ladies of the Church.
