TARIFF AFFAIRS.

CANADA AND UNITED STATES OF

AMERICA. United Press Association— Copyright LONDON, March 23. The “Morning Post’s” Washington correspondent states that President Taft has informed Mr Feilding, Canadian Minister of Finance, that the maximum tariff would be imposed unless the Dominion granted intermediate rates on selected articles, which in Air Taft’s- opinion would not conflict with Canada’s arrangements with other countries. The President promised to use his influence to secure a reciprocal arrangement covering agricultural product's.

FRANCE AND AMERICA. (Received March 24, 8.45 p.m.) . : LONDON, March 24. Reuter’s Paris correspondent reports that 'France has conceded America minimum tariff rates on fewer than one hundred articles out of 600 scheduled, but reserves entire liberty to raise the •rates. This satisfactory result is due to France adopting the Canadian attitude’, and refusing to yield to American bluff. The opinion prevails in France that President Taft’s pliancy is duo to the unpopularity of the tariff in America, and to the diminution of the American foreign balance, raising the problem of how to prevent large exports of gold. ALARMED AMERICANS. (Received March 24, 10.50 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 24. A large deputation, representing the lumber, grain and manufacturing interests, appealed to the United States Secretary of State (Mr. Knox) to avert a tariff war, and pointed out that 200 million dollars (£40,000,000) worth of trade was affected. Mr. Knox advised the deputation not to- feel unduly alarmed.
