FLYWHEEL BURSTS.

A flywheel, ten feet in diameter and weighing • about eight tons, burst on Wednesday, January 26th, at the Wood Milne Rubber Heel Company’s works at Leyland, near Preston, England. Two men were' seriously hurt, and many had narrow escapes. Considerable damage was done by flying fragments of tlie huge wheel, and pieces of metal weighing as mueff as scwt. wei-e flung, to a distance of several hundred yards. One piece cut through the steam pipe leading from the boiler to tlie engine, and a man named William Hasleden was badly scalded in a, rilucky attempt to shut off steam. Joseph Turner was struck on the head by a piece of brick and badly cut. Tlie engine-room roof was wrecked by the fragments of the broken wheel and other pieces smashed through the. walls. A large fragment was thrown 150 yards and went through the wall of the Congregational Sunday School. Another large piece dropped through the. roof of the rubber works, causing a panic among the girls, many of whom fainted Many workers in adjoining mills had narrow escapes from falling pieces of metal.
