GISBORNE HARBOUR BOARD.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. Upon being interviewed by a •''Times” reporter yesterday, Mr. J. W. Witty, tlie secretary bud treasurer of the Harbor Board supplied an interesting summary with regard to tlie Board accounts, which shows that the Board has just had a very successful year. As regards receipts, lie explained that the wharfages for the year amounted to £17,268 Is bd and of this amount £17,267 9s 4d was collected and lodged to credit at the Bank, leaving only 12s Id outstanding, which must be considered a record. Last year the wharfages amounted to £13,011 14s Id (six months of which was under the present tariff), showing a cash increase of £4256 7s 4xl. The port charges. Harbormaster’s fees, and pilotages this year amount to £4524 7s Id as against £5022 Is 7d for 1909, showing a decrease of £697 14s 6d, which was due to a reduction of charges on intercolonial boats, and also , to the fact that in consequence of the great falling-off in passenger traffic on. this coast, since the Main Trunk railway was completed, the larger boats have been withdrawn.

Rents and sundry accounts received were about the same as last year. The not interest on loan funds received from the Public' Trustee for 1910 amounted to £787 Is 2d, against £689 16s 2d for 1909. Under the Gisborne Harbor Harbor Board Act of 1910 the Public Trustee handed over to the Board the unexpended balance of loan funds in his hands, amounting to £26,332 10s 6d. The year closed with a credit balance of £3994 12s 7d.

As to payments, Mr. Witty said that the Board had paid off the debit balance with which the year commenced £8432 17s bd. Also interest on £200,000 loan £IO,OOO. Bank commission and overdraft £806; three instalments of purchase money of the Maui £17,550; salaries, £1963; wages, Maui, including overtime, £2388; wages John Townley, including overtime £1171; wages, general account, £1846; materials, £2230; harbor maintenance and office expenses, £1088; hopper barges. £2I4S; Tuahine lighthouse, £266; legal expenses in connection with Tauwharoparae leases £896- and other sundry accounts leaving an overdraft on 31st December, 1910 of £3994 12s 7d.
