GISBORNE POLICE DISTRICT.
ANNUAL RETURNS
Sergeant Hutton, officer in charge of the Gisborne police district yesterday; completed his annual returns concerning the offences and, crimes committed here during the last twelve months. The statistics show that there has been a decrease’ in offences! against the social order and in the more serious crimes. During last year the ,offences committed totalled 526 which is only ail increase of seven compared with the figures of the preceding yearn Of course, the figures mentioned do not include breaches of the Licensing Act, and only apply to the Gisborne District. Insobriety was the cause of the total number of offences exceeding those of the previous year, for there was an increase of forty-three cases, which included'A large number of first offenders. Sergt. Hutton attributes this to tlie importation of labor to the disrict in connection with the Borough Council’s works and the railway works. Last year showed a decrease of eleven cases for disorderly conduct. There were no serious assaults and common assaults showed a decrease of fifteen oases.

(0); deserting wives and failing to maintain wives and children 16 (10); discharging firearms in a, public place 0 (3); disobedience to orders on summonses 9 (4); disobedience of terms of Probations’ Act 0 (I); false declaration 0 (1); false pretenses 4 (2); (one person arrested on four charges); forger- and uttering 3 (2); furious driving or riding 3 (4); gaming offences 5 (0); illegally on premises 1. (2); indecency 10 (10; malicious inqnry to property 4 (6); child murder 0 (1): obscene language 5 (1.0); obstructing and resisting police 9 (11) ; obstructing thoroughfares 3 (1) ; refusing to quit licensed premises 1 (5); rescuing cattle after being impounded 11 (0): stowaways 4 (4); attempted suicide 0 (1); sureties of the r>eace 2 (2); thefts undescribed 40 (38); offences reported and 29 arrests made; thefts as a bailee 3 (0) ; theft of horses and cattle 1 (2); theft of dogs 2 (2); trespass 1 (0); vaornaey 6 (11) ; broach of Legislature Act 0 (2); theft by servants 0 (1); theft of sheep 1 (0).
