NAPIER WOOL SALES.

A SLIGHT DROP IN PRICES

[Special to Times.]

NAPIER, Jan. G.

A distinctly uneasy feeling pervaded mercantile circles in regard to the wool sales. In the light of the slump in the 'Wellington market, a decided slump in prices was expected, and it was simply a question as to how much the decline would be. There" was a very fine attendance of buyers, and it became evident from the outset of the sale, that a- large number of them were there to get wool, albeit at a lower figure than hitherto. Competition was animated, and, taken all round, prices compared more than favorably with those realised at Wellington. The decline ranged from 4d to Jd as against a. Id average at Wellington, so that growers have not much to complain about. Dalgetv and Co., opened proceedings and found a splendid demand, hut a considerable portion of the lambs’ wool was passed. The succeeding auctioneers disposed of a considerable part of their catalogues, but were hampered to some extent by unreasonably high reserves.

The following is a. comparison of prices for the last two sales :

A FRENCH BUYER INTERVIEWED. M. Pauchet, one of the buyers, stated in an interview that they had been expecting the drop in prices ever since November. Since last week there had been a dead-lock at Roubaix, the high prices paid for wool preventing contracts from being made. There were again complaints as regards the unevenness in classing, and this fault was responsible for a lot of the lambs’ wool being passed.
