THE FRIGE OF SUGAR.
A PROPOSED INCREASE
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
AUCKLAND,
Jan. 6
In connection with a telegram announcing the increase in the price of sugar, the Colonial Sugar Company’s representative points out that when they withdrew the bonus of 10s a ton, which was made illegal by the Act passed last session, they reduced the price of sugar to a corresponding amount, while the scale of discounts was also reduced, to comply with the same Act. There was nothing to warrant an advance of ,30s per ton spoken of in the telegram. The company consider it would not be more than, os per ton. Sugar was cheaper in New Zealand than any other part of the world. The sugar most used was No IA, listed at £l4 los . if a dealer took full .advantage of the discount, he got sugar at £l4 0s 3d, equal to ]-J- per pound.
