GISBORNE CLUB

One of the most hotly contested races seen on the river this season took place on the Waimata course last evening. -The first heat of the Schumacher Fours, in which the competing crews were -stroked by Donald and McLean, was rowed, and resulted in a win for the former’s crew, which was made up as follows: Donald (stroke), Dawson (3), Jeffreys (2), and Wright (bow). McLean had with lnm O’Brien (3), Bousfield (2), and A. de Lautour (bow). McLean won tbe toss. The start was » good one, and Donald’s crew went ahead slightly from the first “catch.” McLean came up with him on the bend, and, passing Donald, led by nearly a length to the junction. At that point Donald rallied his crew, and, putting in -some spirited work, managed to get on even terms, both crews passing under the bridge simultaneously. The race now developed _ into a stroke-for-stroke struggle, and it was only the superior time and well-drilled state of Donald’s

crew which brought liim to the post the victor by half a, length. The heats are to be continued this evening, when Curtis meets de Lautour.
