NEW ZEALAND LABOR PARTY.

MEETING OF GISBORNE BRANCH

A meeting of the members of the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Labor Party was held on Saturday evening in 'Townicy’s Hall, after the' public meeting at the- Sievwright Memorial. Mr. Turner occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. Mr T. Jackson reported that he had, as directed by the Party at last meeting, asked the Borough Council to place taps for the convenience of the general public on the Kaiti and Waikanae beaches, and also in the recreation grounds. He stated that the Council were not able • at present to do more than place one tap on the Esplanade, but that when the estimates were being made up for next year a certain amount would probably be allocated for this particular purpose. Mr Jackson’s report was received with satisfaction by members present. The Secretary (Mr. J. IT. Hall) stated that the Holy Trinity Schoolroom had been engaged for Tuesday evening, on which occasion Air. A. Withy wo'uld give a further address on the subject of rating on unimproved values. Mr. T. Jackson would occupy the chair. It was also notified that further addresses would be given at the Sievwright Memorial on Wednesday evening prior to tiie poll, on which occasion the opposition were to he invited to he present and state their objections. Messrs Jackson and Turner were elected a committee (with power to acid to their number), for the purpose of arranging details for the poll of ratepayers on Thursday next. The arrangements for bringing ratepayers to the poll were left in the hands of the same committee, as was also the appointment of scrutineers. It was decided to ask Mr. J. R. Ivii'k to act as chairman for the return debate with the Rechabite- Lodge _on Tuesday week, the subject being, “Which is the greater evil —drink or land monopoly?”
