THE MEAT WAR.
AUSTRALIA AND THE ARGENTINE THE NODULE TROUBLE. With reference to the cabled announcement that Switzerland and Austria have decided to make even further concessions in regaid to the admission ol Argentine meat, it turns out that Australia is still in the position of not even being allowed a look-in on the Continent. Inquiries by a “Sun” representative among leading exporters in Sydney were met with the same answer in every instance. Said the manager of one of tlie largest institutions in Sydney:— “With i Girard to Australian meat, steps have been taken by the Home authorities to introduce it and create a market in Austria and other portions of the European Continent. But so far without success. This has been going on for years. One of the leading frozen meat exporters of Australia said recently that the regulations were so stingent that mo it was actually prohibited, now preference has actually been given to the Argentine. Onr position in Australia remains unaltered, none of tlie meat being allowed on tlie Continent at aIL “Additional trouble has been caused hv the recent reports concerning nodules in Australian beef.. As to whether this is justified or not is a very open question. The so-called nodules have been known to exist in beef for generations back, but this, however, dees not alter tin* situation, and dees not certainly improve our chances of-extending the market^ “At the present time no beef is allowed to be shinned from Australia in the whole carcase, that is to sav, without certain nortions being cut off.”
