HARBOR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Harbor Board was held yesterday afternoon, . when there -were present:— Messrs. John Townley (chairman), C. J. Parker, J. Clark, J. B. Kells, G. Matthewson, F. Harris, and the Hon. Captain Tucker. REPORTS. —Harbormaster.— / The Harbormaster reported that the southern gale from February 11th to 13th, and the accompanying fresh through rain, had caused a great quantity of silt to settle along the town Avharf. This had caused great inconvenience to shipping, rendering it impossible to /work any but vessels of light draught. The Petone was compelled to discharge Cat the Kaiti side, being unable to berth at the town wharf. The shipping at the port since last meeting was :—-Steamers : Arrivals 39, departures 39. Sailing- ships: Arrivals 5, departures 4. Lighter dues: S 5 at 2s 6d, £lO 12s 6d; harbor improvement rate, £l7 6s 7d. The report was adopted. —Dredgem aster.—
The dredgemaster (Mr. A. Park) reported 'that the work done by the Maui from February Ist to February 25th inclusive totalled 13,600 tons, dredged and deposited at sea, which was mostly stiff blue clay. Owing to bad weather sloav progress was made Avitli the dredging at the river entrance, so a start Avas made opposite the white beacon, and subsequently at the end of the town wharf, where stiff blue clay, with a small percentage of pana, was being obtained. They Avero still carrying to the usual depth of 16ft at low Avater, and all the dredging plant Avas in good order, and working most satisfactorily. The report was adopted.
—Overseer.—
The Overseer (Mr. D. A. McLeod) reported on the work recently undertaken in regard to the enlarging of No. 2 shed, and the erection of a new shed for a temporary bonded store. The latter building was completed on the I.4th instant at a cost of £lO5 10s. Blasting of the papa rock in the undredged portion* of the channel is being proceeded with as the weather permits. Other work during the month consisted of boat-building, boat repairs, and slip work. Stone and gravel removed from the Kaiti beach during the month, totalled 125 loads.
THE “JOHN TOWNLEY.”
Captain Solvander, of the dredge John ToAvnley, reported on the satisfactory nature of the recent overhaul of his vessel. Ten days he stated had since been occupied in towing barges of spoil away from the Maui, and six days dredging by the toAvn wharf,.
A number of accounts Avere authorised for payment, and the Board proceeded to the discussion of several items of general business.
