ROWING.

NOTES BY “OARSMAN.”

Rain during the last week somewhat hampered boat work, and the representative! cvrews were compelled to be satisfied with running, skipping, etc. The shed presented a very lively appearance. Keen interest is being taken in the Double Sculling events, for Mr A. J. Cox’s Cup. I understand, entries are coming forward freely for the next set of four oar races. Mr. J. F. Pettie has kindly donated a set of gold medals. Entries' close at the boat-house on the 11th inst. The interest which is being evinced in the RejYqrsenta.tive events, shows that there should be moic Inter-Club racing, during the season. We are badly off for regattas, there being no local ones between opening day and the Inter-Olub championships, at the close of the season. The gap is too big and wants filling up. This is one of the things which are wanted to liven rowing up. The delegates in charge of the Licensed Victuallers’ Competition, wisely altered the distance of the Junior race from a f-mile to course. There is no doubt that rowing over the short, course on the Waimata river has killed scientific rowing. It does not give a crew a chance, _ The senior crew, owing to one of its members failing to put in an appearance on two occasions, and also- the wet weather, did not do much boat work this week. It would be a pity, now that this crew lias such good combination, if any .alteration had to be made. Hamilton (str) has improved out of sight in the last fortnight. Inclined to row short. Training hard,, but will have to reduce his weigliP a little yet. Tocker (three), training hard; falls away from the oar, and is a. little late on the catch. Richards (two), drops Ins shouider badly on the catch. Would do well if he were more enthusiastic, about his training. McConville (bow), replaced Cowan, is not as heavy, but is, I think, the best man the selectors could find to fill the gap. Does not catch with a- straight arm, consequently screws. The representative races have been fixed forthe 6th 7th, and Bth of April. Messrs J. Colley and . Co. have presented a Competition Shield for Double Sculling, to be rowed for at the same time. KEMP AND PEARCE WISH TO MEET ARNST. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION' —COPYRIGHT. J (Received March 7. 12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 7. Kemp is still unable to find the full £SOO to put up against Arnst, Put he is hopeful of beating Pearce in the forthcoming race for the championship of Australia, and is confident that then he will he able to raise the £soo'. Perace is also keen to race Arnst, and if he beats Kemp proposes to immediately arrange a match with A rasa.
