TROUBLE IN UNION PARLIAMENT
THE BUDGET DENOUNCED
An independent cable service message from Capetown, dated March 21st, states that there was a heated' debate in Union Parliament on a motion calling for a Select Committee to consider the Budget, which was denounced as extravagant and unconstitutional. Special objection was taken to the proposed provision of £13,000,000 for public buildings in Pretoria. Premier Botha declared that the appointment of such a committee would be nothing more nor less than a vote of censure, and when the division was taken the Transvaal Ministers withdrew, and the motion was rejected. THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT'S TRIBUTE. A cable message from London, dated Marcm2 : 2j : states that the Duke of Connaught, speaking at the annual dinner of tlie South African Society, said that under the sympathetic and devoted government of Premier Botha the country would progress rapidly. The people of South Africa were taking a keen interest in the Union, and the conjoined States now ranked with Australia and! Canada among the great self-governing States of the Empire.
