HOME RULE.
MR. JOHN REDMOND AND THE PROTESTANTS.
In the course of a speech at Glasgow, Mr John Redmond, 31. P., said that the f»ar of the Protestant minority that they would suffer oppression from the Roman Catholics under a system of Home Rule was a gross insult. He would remind all who entertained that fear of the experience of Canada, and if that did not satisfy them he would willingly insert in Ireland’s Constitution any safeguards protecting the minority. Mr John Dillon, M.P., speaking m Yorkshire. • reiterated that all the Premiers of Britain’s self-governing possessions were strong Irish Home-Rulers. INDEPENDENT NATIONALISTS WANT RECONCILIATION. Mr. Win. O’Brien. M.P., the Independent Nationalist leader, in a letter to the “Times,” makes overtures of reconciliation to Mr. W. Redmond, M.P., and the main branch of the Irish party, suggesting tliat the two sections might be reunited. This refers to Mr. Redmond’s assurances that the desires of the Protestant minority would be respected. Mr. O’Brien asks. “Is Mr. Redmond intending to put his assurances into . practice bv separating the two bodies, the United Irish League and the Board of Erin? I put this question becaaise the first rule of the Board of Erin, the officers of which control the executive of the United Irish - League, is that* no Protestant is permitted to be a ment- - her.”
