THE BOOTMAKING INDUSTRY.
CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATIONS AUCKLAND, April 6. A conference between representatives of manufacturers and workers in the boot industry in Auckland, regarding the supply of operative labor, opened at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. -Mr. Dearsley said that no one who took an intelligent view of the position could fail to recognise the existence of a very real difficulty. The object of the conference was to secure united action in representing the needs of the industry to the Government. Statements were made by manufacturers claiming a serious shortage of both boy and girl labor. Mr. Whitting denied that the employers’ statements correctly represented the position. The alleged shortage of labor was due to the unattractive conditions of the boot industry. The chairman said the question was whether the trade was to be stimulated by additional tariff protection, or to go out of existence. After discussion the conference adjourned.
