COLLEY SHIELD. AN INTERESTING RACE. Tlie race for the Colley Shield was rowed off on the Waimata course last evening under favourable weather conditions, and a very interesting race was witnessed. The trophy, which is for double-sculling competition between the district clubs, was only presented by Messrs Colley and Co. a few months ago, and consequently yesterday's race was the first m which it has been competed for. Tiiis season only two clubs enteieo Uawa and Poverty Bay—and when the crews left the boat-house, a glance at each man was sufficient to. Show that a hard race might be anticipated. The following were the crews: Poverty Bay: M. McLeod (str.), J. W Nicolas (bow), and A. O' Neill (cox). Uawa: B. Lincoln (str.), J. Lockwood (bow) and R. Thompson (cox). From a good start Poverty Bay when half a dozen strikes had gone they were leading by half a length. A the first bend Uawa had lessened the Poverty Bay lead by about half and, at the function were almost racing level. After a few more lengths had been covered, however, Poverty Bay began to draw ahead, and on passing under the bridge had again assumed the. lead, crews practically raced in this position to the* Tuatea, where Uawa made a bold effort to again draw near. Poverty Bay, however, were equal to the occasion, and putting in a dozen quick strokes at the finish passed the post with a'dength and a quarter to .be good. Time 4mm. 49secs. On returning to the boathouses tlie crews received a great ovation li»ni the large number of spectators wno lined the river, and the Poverty day win was a very popular one.
