DESPERATE YOUNG PRISONER.
JUMPS FROM SOUTH EXPRESS. AND EFFECTS HIS ESCAPE. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. ) INVERCARGILL, April 11. A prisoner named Joseph Christie, 17 years of age, who was recently senteno ed to a term of imprisonment by the Supreme Court in Dunedin for breaking and entering and theft, jumped from this afternoon’s express when passing Woodlands. This prisoner and another, who is seiving live years, were in change of Principal Warder Kearney, who allowed Christie, at his request, to go to the lavatory, but instead of doing so, the prisoner opened the door of the carriage and jumped out. It is stated that ho landed on liis feet and made off. No time was lost by the prison authorities, on being acquainted with the escape, in taking steps to effect a recapture. and motor cars were employed to reach the scene,, without delay. Christie has escaped no less than four times from Burnham industrial school. So far there is no news of his capture.
