TIMARU PRESBYTERY.
THE LICENSE AND LABOUR QUESTIONS.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.J TIMARU, April 11. At the Timaru Presbytery to-day a remit from the Assembly suggesting that the Presbytery should urge people to- vote “No-license” gave rise to a discussion. ... A. motion was made: “That it- he left to each minister to help the cause of temperance in the manner he thinks best,” and the seconder added that Nolicense should be a .test question of the selection of a minister. An amendment: “That the Presbytery does not urge l on the people the desirability of voting No-license,” was carried by six to four. The . eight ministers present were equally divided, the two elders giving the majority. On another remit expressing sympathy with Labour and* recommending Presbyteries, where necessary, to appoint committees to learn the aims of the Labour movement and foster fraternal relations between the Church and Labour, no action was taken, ministers saying that they had studied the movement and that ministers should know- no class distinctions. The majority of church people had to work with hand 1 or brain for a living.
