A meeting of Mr. W. D. Lysnar’s supporters for the Mayoral election was held last evening, when there was a. large attendance. Owing to the Mayor being unable to be present on account of the meeting of the Borough Council, the business transacted was of a minor character, and the meeting terminated about 9.30, p.m. A case of cruelty to a horse by some half-castes has come under the notice of the local branch of the S.P.C.A. Inquiries are being made by the Society’s inspector, and as the case appears to be a serious one, it is probable that more will be hoard of it. Collection of the Census papers m the borough is still steadily progressing though the holidays will somewhat impede matters, ; Those residents who are likely to be absent; during Easter holidays are asked to leave the census schedules with Mr. H. E. Hill, the district enumerator, in order that the work will be facilitated.

In reply to inquiries made at the hospital late last night it was stated that the man James Blanche remained insensible and in a very serious state.

Thomas Leonard Easton, alias AVilliam Wilson, was charged before Mi. W. A. Barton, S.M., yesterday, with breaking and entering the dwelling of John Mackav, of Heimuna, and stealing therefrom £3 os.. The police applied for a remand until the 23rd inst., but the prisoner opposed this, on the ground that he had already pleaded guilty, and wished to be dealt with as soon as possible. His Worship explained to the prisoner the need c. a remand, and granted the application. For driving a vehicle quickly • round the corner from Gladstone Hoad to Peel Street, Henry Conn, eabdriver, who did not appear, was fined and 7s costs, in the -Magistrate’s Cotlrt yesterday. The work of lightering the tramway rails from the s.s. Whakarua is proceeding satisfactorily, arid the wharves present a very busy spectacle, with the great number of vehicles which have been called into requisition to cart the rails away as they are landed. Each rail is twenty-four feet long, and of considerable weight, and four of them make a fair load for a one-horse dray. All day long the rails were coming ashore, and the stream of traffic issuing from the vicinity of the wharf was almost perpetual during working hours. By a misunderstanding two lighters, which could not be brought up to the wharf on the low tide, were not drawn in on the morning tide yesterday, and this occasioned some little delay, as they had to be left until the afternoon tide lifted them. However, the work is proceeding with all possible rapidity, and it is hoped to complete the discharge of this portion of the AYhakarua’s cargo at an early date.

Our Kahukura correspondent telegraphs that yesterday a man named McGrath, a bush contractor, employed by Messrs. Clarke Bros., met with a severe accident. He was crossing a log lying across a deep gully, when he slipped and fell, dropping about loft on to another tree truuk below. He suffered a fracture of one leg below the knee and his other leg was badly bruised. He was conveyed by his mates on a stretcher part of the way to Te Araroa. A conveyance then met them, and took him the rest of the way. T"? Fnir n C'a.’s Maheiro did not get away for Sydney from Auckland till close on 12 o'clock on Monday night, owing to the shortage of men to work her cargo. At 9 o’clock the Maheno was still discharging her cargo from the after hold. while there was a large qua nit tv ot general cargo and passengers' luggage waiting to be shipped. The vessel carried a large number of passengers, numbering 357 all told —172 saloon and 215 steerage. A large number of passengers intend' proceeding to England, and connect at Sydney with the Orient liner Omrah, leaving Sydney on April 26th, and the new Aberdeen liner Themistocles, leaving Sydney on April 21. Among the Maheno’s passengers were a number of Gisbornites, including Mrs J. R. Gardiner, Mrs AY. Gibson and daughter, Mr and Mrs C. Matthews, and Mr A. F. Saunders. The annual convention of the local Christian Endeavour Societies will be held to-morrow, commencing at 7 a.m., with a prayer meeting in the Salvation Aimy Citadel. At 11 a.m. a communion service will be held at St. Andrews’ Church, and' at 3 p.m. a service will he held in the Methodist Church. In the evening an open-air meeting will be held at 7 p.m., and at 7.30 p.m. rn .evangelistic meeting will be held at the Baptist Tabernacle. Regarding the Tauwhareparae block, an exchange is being arranged with one of the Harbour Board’s tenants of an adjoining section in order that a better fencing line for the cutting up of the improved portion may be obtained. The Board is being given the right to lease a piece of Air Murphy’s freehold in conjunction with one of its own sections, and Air Alurphy is to be given the right to lease another section adjoining 'liis own. The Gisborne -railway for the monthly period ending Apm sth showed a profit of £BO9. The receipts totalled £1617, an increase of £537 upon that of the coresponding period of last year. There were 767 S passengers carried, 427 parcels, 52 dogs, 10,492 sheep, 22 cattle and horses and 2729 tons of goods. Air H. M. Finn was nominated for a seat on tlie Borough Council yesterday. Air Jas. Brown will probably be,, a candidate for both the Council and Board. Air J. T. Cahill, who has been engaged by the High School Beard as instructor in wool-classing, will commence operations on Tuesday. He will proceed to Alotu, where lie will give an address and a class will be formed. Meetings. will be held at Matawai and Rakanroa on the following day, and. already there is much promise of the classes being heartily supported. Other places will be visited later. Air F. G.
