A BREEZE IN THE BOROUGH COUNCIL
THE CONSIDERATION OF THE J DRAINAGE SPECIFICATIONS.
When tonsidering the specifications concerning the sewerage works at the Council meeting last evening a passage at arms occurred between the Mayor and Cr. Collins. Some reference was made to certain matters coming before the new Council by the Mayor, when he was taken to task' bv Cr. Collins, who wanted' to know what was the good of the Council considering tenders or anything else if the new Council was going to review the matters over again. The Mayor: I said I hoped some of the tilings will be brought before the new. Council. Cr. Collins: You never said anything of the sort. You said it was only a question of a month when these matters will be rectified. It is absolutely not right to threaten the councillors that these matters would he rectified. It is a pure waste of time to go on with the business. Cr Collins then walked out. In reply to Cr. Darten, the. Mayor said he would he glad if some things were brought before the new Council. Cr. Dart-on: Well, if these specifications are to go before the new Council it is not worth while continuing with the work of considering them. The Mayor said that it was not fair that important.work should he delayed. This work should 'have been done before.
Cr. Collins then returned. The Mayor: I thought you had left. Cr. Collins said that the Council had not delayed the work. It was only out of courtesy to the Mayor that the specifications had not been dealt with at the previous meeting. It was, therefore. the Mayor who had delayed the matter by being away. If the Mayor did not approve of the matter he would take it before the new Council and have it rectified. AYliat was the good of asking the Council to sit there and waste time? The Mayor was the person who was holding up the business. The Mayor said that there was no reason to adjourn the matter until his return. He knew Air Alarchant was right. Cr. Collins said that the Mayor could not be expected to adjudicate when he was prejudiced in favour of the consulting engineer. The Mayor said that ho would call for tenders at once if the Council desired it. He would advertise for tenders in the morning if they desired. It was not right that the matter should have been delayed so long. This seemed to satisfy councillors, and after a little further discussion, the matter was allowed to drop.
