Mr. Gresham, coroner, found that the fire at Tipper’s motor garage, in Quay Street, occurred in the basement at 10.45 p.m. on March 10, the evidence being sufficient to show that the fire was wilfully occasioned, but by whom there is no proof. Parker’s renowned prize--win-ning rough-coated collie Mosgiel Wallace 5 has been poisoned, and is not likely to recover. A CONFESSION OF THEFT. WELLINGTON, April 20. A married man named Arthur Cant, avlio Avas in charge of the Labor Department of the Union Steamship Co., gave himself up to the police yesterday in connection Avith the theft of .£ll6, the property of the company. It is understood that he Avas given £l6O to pay off the creAV of the Koromiko, and appropriated £ll6 to pay his own debts. A WELLINGTON BURGLARY. The offices of Scott and Martindale, in the Stock Exchange buildings, were entered by burglars last night, and a sum of about £l5O in notes and gold, together Avith a number of cheques, Avas stolen. It is surmised that the safe from Avhich the money Avas taken had been inadvertently left unlocked.
AN ALLEGED SUGAR 'TRUST. GREYMOUTH, April 20
At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night, considerable discussion took place upon an alleged sugar trust said to be existing in the Dominion. The folloAving resolution Avas carried unanimously: “That this Chamber condemns the tactics of the Sugar Company in arranging Avith a few commercial houses in NeAV Zealand, to the detriment of the? public.” It Avas alleged that the Sugar Company refuse to allow any bonus on direct purchases except to the value of £SOO and over, and that practically means that the public contribute 2,} per cent, upon the gross consumption of sugar in the Dominion to four or five commercial houses.
ALLEGED RACECOURSE BETTING CHRISTCHURCH, April 20.
The first ease under the Gaining Act for betting on a racecourse will be heard at the Magistrate’s Court litre on Tuesday next, there being six informations against three bookies. TIMARU LOAN PROPOSALS. TIMARU, April 20. Polls were taken yesterday for three Borough loan proposals, viz., £36,000 for the extension of the drainage (new borough £10,000), new • treets £40,000, municipal buildings about £IOOO. The two larger sums were carried with a few dissentients, and ihe third by two to one.
UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS. DUNEDIN, April 20. At- a meeting of the Education Board yesterday the Chief Inspector, Mr Richardson, reported that some teachers in the Board’s service had passed the necessary examinations, but were treated as uncertificated teachers until they were 21 years of age. In the meantime they could not be permanently employed." They lost from 5 to 10 per cent, in salary, and could not become contributors to the superannuation fund. The Board decided to bring the facts under the notice of the Department. It was also decided to urge the Dei. artment to establish a central school of correspondence for the assistance of uncertificated teachers throughout the Dominion. The Otago Education Board to-day resolved that all certificated and partially certificated teachers in the Board’s employ be informed that they were only temporarily engaged, and unless they make reasonable efforts to qualify for certificates at next annual examination, the Board in March, 1912, will take steps to fill positions with certificated teachers.
