HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Cook Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held last night. Present: Mr. Charles Gray (chairman), T. Holden, G. W. Tiffen. D. Hepburn, F. J. Lysnar, Rev. W. Lamb, and Dr. Collins. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. W. D. Lysnar. A letter was read from Messrs Atkins and Bacon, architects for the proposed new hospital, intimating that they would proceed at once witn the preparation of the working plans and specifications. They .also said they felt it their duty to point out that the western wing of the plateau is narrow, and that as it. is necessary to leave at least a clear 40 feet between the infectious hospital and the western boundary, the useful width is cramped. They therefore suggested that the Board should consider the advisableness of a portion of the western slope, adjoining equal to 40 feet horizontal measurement.—Received. The Inspector-General of Hospitals notified the Board of a Hospitals Conference, authorised by .the Minister in charge of the Department, and which is to be held in Wellington on June 14. On the motion of Mr. Tiffen, seconded by the Rev. W. Lamb, it was decided that the Chairman and Dr. Collins should be appointed delegates to the meeting. Dr. Valintine forwarded' a further letter in reference to a scheme for preventing, by inoculation, the nurses at the hospital from catching typhoid. It was decided to refer the letter to the nurses at the hospital. REPORTS. The Hospital report was as follows: —■ Patients remaining from last report 42, patients since admitted 49, discharged 41, deaths 5, remaining at date 45. On behalf of the Visiting Committee the Rev. W. Lamb recommended that the proposed drying room be not gone on with. The Matron, he said, had never asked for it, and they soon would be building a new hospital.—The- recommendation was adopted. The Custodian of the Old People’s Home reported that the number of inmates in the Home at last meeting of the Board was 15 (13 men and 2 women) and the same number remained at present. He desired to acknowledge with thanks, the '.following gifts received during ,the .month: Papers, Mr. Gowland; magazines, Mr. E. D’. Smith; boots ,a friend; buns, Mr. Wootton. The Treasurer’s statement was as follows: Credit balances .at Bank of New Zealand after accounts paid, Hospital account £122 4s Id, charitable aid account £45 3s lOd, Government subsidy on levies due £lO9l 10s sd; total, £1258 18s 4d. Liabilities: Balance purchase monev land (about) £1700; balance contract children’s ward £ll9, balance contract laying pipes back road £59 10s, £IB7B 10s; dependency, gravelling back road. _ The Visiting Committee for the. ensuing month were appointed, Messrs W. D. Lysnar and W. D. S. MacDonald. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting proceeded to the discussion ofjsome items of general business.
