An excited debate took place in the Chamber of Deputies. The Minister of the Interior stated that the former Grand Vizier had granted explorers the right to excavate, two passages. Permission for a third attempt from the sanctuary of the mosque of Omar was refused. Tlie explorers then corrupted the officials, and violated the sanctuary*? The baggage of am Englishman was searched at. Jaffa, but contained no proof of thefts. Mr Parker, interviewed, said that, all the antiquities found in Jerusalem were handed to tlie Turkish authorities.
