• ADVANCE IN PRICES. ACTIVE DEMAND FOR ALL QUALITIES. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.! LONDON, May 9. The wool sales have opened at par to 5 per cent, advance. CROSSBREDS’ FIRM ADVANCE. LONDON, May 10. At the wool sales 8245 bales were offered of wliicli 11 limber two -Ibitds wore from N6\v Zealand. There was a somewhat miscellaneous selection, but a very large attendance, and keen competition resulted for both Continental and Home markets.

The prices obtained were from par to five per centum advance all round, the greatest rise being in coarse crossbreds.

HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION J WELLINGTON, May 10. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, May 9, states: The third series of wool sales commenced with a general and active demand for all qualities. The trade is good at Home and on the Continent. Merinos, fine crossbreds, and medium crossbreds show £d. peiMb advance, and coarse $d advance. The estimated values of New Zealand. wools at the close of the second series of colonial wool sales held in London on Ist April were: Super merino, Is to Is 2d; medium lOd to 11-i-d; inferior, 8d to 9jd; fine crossbreds, all grades, lL)d to 12d; medium, 9d to lid; coarse 84d to lOd. LOCAL CABLES.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., were yesterday receipt of the following cablegram from their London office re wool:—“There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers being active. Prices, as compared with the close of preceding series, ruled par to 5 per cent, higher, except coarse crossbred, 5 per cent, higher. The Bank of New Zealand yesterday received the following cable from the London office:—“The wool sales have opened with strong competition and a large attendance of buyers. The market is strong for all kinds of wool, and prices are higher, from par to 5 per cent. Total net quantity of New Zealand wool available 100,000.” Messrs. Common, Shelton, and Co. received the fallowing cablegram yesterday :—-Market opened with a strong demand; medium crossbeds 2) per cent, up as compared with the closing rates of, March sales. 1
