The “Standard” states that after the reporters left Monday’s Colonial Tnstitute meeting, Sir John Downer, a South Australian member of Parliament, being invited by the chairman to speak, referred to the Australian referenda proposals. Lord Carrington (sharply): We canlit have politics here under any circumstances. This is a non-political meeting. No politics! While the chairman maintained an impressive silence, ; he .indicated that the sympathy of the meeting was with Sir John Downer, who apologised for unintentionally offending. He said he was sorry he had done so, adding: “1 am still more sorry that you called on me to speak.”
