CORRESPONDENCE.

MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTION.

[TO THE EDITOE.3

Sir. You did well to remind us_ of the importance of the coming election. It would be just as well to remind the people also of a similar sort of election that took place some time ago, when manv voters being so sure of the return of their candidate neglected to register their votes. This seat is an important one. Had Mr. Anderson proved himself anything like the last Labor representative, there would be no difficulty in the selection. I know manv would have voted for him for the partv’s sake. There* are many, howin that party who are wise enough to realise they would be better without Mr. Anderson as a representative. Shall I tell what the day labor system has done for Gisborne? It has played havoc with contracting. It would need a man with rather a stiff back to take up a contract here after the last term’s administration, and_ a contractor vould needs have some inducement to attempt the Herculean task of satisfying his three masters — the Mayor, the Council, and the Engineer. Mv friend Mr. Anderson knows better than does Mr. Sturrock! Is that not riding the high horse rather too scon?—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER.
