The ratepayers of Akitio _ County, which is situated between Paliiatua and the East Coast, on Saturday carried a proposal to raise, £28,000 for bridging andi road works. The voting was: For the proposal, 183; against, 50. , A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR.-, ; C'HRISTGHURC, May 22." Hie body of a newly-born male child was found in the Heathoote river yesterday. At an inquest this morning, the evidence showed that the child was born alive, and death was due to failure to tie the umbilical cord. The child was dead when put into the water. No. evidence as to identity was forthcoming. THE RECENT ELECTIONS. Two disputed polls in connection with the recent Harbor Board elections were the subject of a magisterial inquiry. Objections were lodged by Paparua and Waimari Countries on the ground that plural voting had been allowed. Both polls were declared void, and the returning officers were ordered to pay the. advertising costs.
