CANADA AND THE NEGRO PROBLEM.
“The question rasied in the Dominion House of Commons last week regarding the admission or rejection of American negroes as immigrants to Canada has brought the colour question into considerable prominence, and events reported recently arc likely to lead to further embarrassment for the Dominion Government,” says the. “Manchester Guardian.” “A: number of negroes who were ‘held up’ on the Alberta border by the immigration authorities were, on receipt of instructions from Ottawa, permitted to enterrCanada. This has raised strong protests in the province, and the Provincial Government is being urged to expel them as undesirable immigrants. The Board of Trade is supporting the agitation, but the Hon. A. C. Rutherford, the Provincial Premier and Minister of Education, declares that the Government is as the provincial laws give no authority for making a colour distinction with regard to immigrants. “The whole subject will be carried fco Ottawa, and, supported by the antiAsiatic clamour from British Columbia and the other Western provinces, bids fair to raise a fine crop of troubles for the Dominion Government.”.
