TAUWHAREPARAE SECTIONS.

'THE QUESTION OF ROADfkN'G.

WHO SHOULD PI!0VIDE?

Tlx? question of reading the Tauwhareparae sections was discussed at a meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday. MsesrsW. Tucker and It. de Lauteur, lessees of sections 5 and 4, Tauwharaparae; respectively, wrote stating that as they we,i/e about to erect dwellings on their sections! 'they would be glad if the Board would give them some idea when they intended to proceed with the formation of the road from the old homestead through sections 4, 5 and! 6. The' country this road passed through was exceptionally easy for road making, and as it, was very light soil it would make no- difference whether the work was carried out: in winter or summer. Under the terms of the lease they were required to erect buildings trr the vane of £4OO They wished to build at once, but it was almost impossible to get timber in without a road. The Chairman said that this letter brought; the question of endowments before the Board. They hud' not done anyhing in be way of road making on the block and had given no guarantee that a road would be made. r lhe land had been let in April, _ but tlie leases would not commence till Jnlv Ist, in order that all the leases would be uniform. It was the system of the J3oard to have all the leases fall in on the same date. They could make an adjustment for a short period until the leases were made up. He thought that as this road was part of the Inland Waiapu roa'd it was a County toad., _ Mr. F. J. Lysnar wanted to know if there were any promises made at the sale. The Chairman replied that there was not, hut somebody who did not purchase asked about a road. A road on the hush block was now under survey. Mr. Waohsmann said he did not think the people could he expected to build houses if roads were not provided to carry the timber over. When the sections were purchased the buyers thought tliev were to get a road. Mr. Clark said that lie was always of the opinion that a road should he provided. The Chairman thought that the matter should he left to a committee. The Board at present were not in a position to make a road, even, if they desired to do so. Cr. Collins: Might I suggest that the matter he left to the works committee. It almost comes under the category of works. The committee could bring up a report on the matter. Mr. Clark thought it _ would he wise to leave tlie matter until they got the surveyor’s report. It was eventually decided that the matter should be left to the works committee, and Messrs. Clark, Wachsmann, and Humphreys to deal with. Mr. A. G. Turnbull, Tokomaru Bay, wrote stating that with regard to his section (No. 3, the Tauwhareparae leases) he would like to call the Board’s attention to the fact that a fencing line and an old fence through the hush already existed along a line parallel to his western boundary, and about five chains away from it. His present line along this boundary was absolutely impossible for fencing, and it could he extended to the old fence. This would bring in another 50 acres or so into his section, for which lie would be prepared to pay additional rental ecmal. to the knock-down rental of the adjoining section when it was sold. He understood from the surveyor that he was unaware of the existence of the old fence when lie cut up the sections, or he would have made that line the western boundary of No. 3 section.. The request wa's granted.
