NOTES FROM TOKOMARU
[FEOM OUE OWN COEEESPONDENT.}
We ‘have been experiencing some very cold weather in the Bay, as can be expected this time of the year, and for several weeks now we have had but- an occasional fine day. There has been several deaths among the natives here lately, including a young fellow named Haie Hautapu, who was mucli respected by all who knew him. He was a prominent member of the local football club, and was a fairly successful competitor at both Tokomar u and Tologa < Bay athletic sports meetings. He was married a little over a year ago, and leaves a young wife and child. The s.s. Rotorua arrived yesterday (May 24th) to ship a cargo of beef and mutton from the local freezing works. The works will be closing down shortly, and some of the butchers have already left for Australia, where they intend to. kill next season.
The s.s. Haupiri was unable to discharge her cargo from Auckland this trip. She came in on Sunday morning and landed one boatload of perishable goods on the beach, the sea being too rough at the wharf, before leaving the BayAll the timber for the mission house at Toikomaru Bay is son the site and the foundation and frame of the building are well under way. An Assembly Club has been formed by a number of the local young men for the purpose of holding socials and dances fortnightly. The. first dance came off last Friday • evening, . and. was quite a success. The floor being in really good order and the music good, all present appeared to enjoy the evening. The Club hope shortly to be in a position to procure a piano of their own, which will do away with the expense and labor of hiring an instrument and carting it to the hall, as it at present the caeo. The roads in this district, considering the bad weather we have had up till now, are fairly good, and the metalling that was done through the summer makes it much easier for the inhabitants to get about this winter.
