BOWLING.
IURANGANUI CLUB. Considering the lateness of the season the attendance of howlers at the Turanganui Club’s green yesterday was very satisfactory. The green, after the week’s, fine weather,-was playing exceedingly well and true. Chief interest in the afternoon’s play was centred in the semi-final for the Handicap Pairs, between pairs skipped by Robertson and Nasmith, jun. The result was as follows :
F. Gray and M. G. Nasmith, jun. (skip) (5 points), 26, beat R. Thelwall and R. Robertson (skip) (3 points), 25. —Owing to Gray’s absence, H. Martin acted as his substitute. On the first four heads Robertson failed to score, Nasmith in each instance drawing the shot with his first bowl, the scores, with the handicap, on the 4th head reading: Nasmith 10, Robertson 3. On the sth head Thelwall got in his four bowls, to which Robertson added another, Nasmith failing to save. Two more went to Robertson on the next head, making the scores 10 all on the 6th head. In the following head Nasmith and his partner put in a three, to which Robertson and Thelwall replied with a. similar number on the next head—l 3 all, Bth head. Each side then scored a single on the following two heads, leaving honors still even—l 4 all, 10th head. Robertson and Thelwall then put up some excel : lent shots, and the score on the 16tK head read: Robertson and Thelwall 24, Nasmith and Martin , 17.. The_ 17th head saw some?' good play. Nasmitß drew two shots, _ and with his third trailed the jack slightly, but lay only
one. as the result. Robertson with his third bowl carried the jack. and lay four.' Nasmith failed to save, but Robertson with his last inadvertently knocked liis opponents’ bowl into- shot. Three went to Nasmith and his partner on the 18th head, and the same pair annexed a couple on the 19th head, thus making honors even—24 all. Semi-darkness had now set in, but the play was keenly watched by a large number of spectators. The 20th head saw Robertson lying one when the skips went down. Nasmith beat the shot bowl. Robertson drew a lovely one on the jack with liis first. With a firm shot Nasmith took him off, carried the jack, and lay four. Robertson drew third shot, arid his opponent failed to score. The next bowl of Robertson’s was a beauty, and lay an inch off the jack. With his last bowl—a running shot—Nasmith put the shot ball through, arid lay two, Robertson failing to alter with his last. In the final head, Tlielwall gave his opponent the shot by knocking in Martin’s bowl. Robertson endeavored to run him through, while Nasmith essayed io get a second. With his last bowl Nnwn't i got a second, while Robertson, with his la*t rested the shot howl through and la-v one, thus suffering defeat L.v the it" n’ovv margin of one point.
GISBORNE CLUB
The beautiful afternoon was responsible for a, very large- muster of players on the Gisborne Club’s green yesterday. Every rinlc was full, and, considering the lateness of the season, the green was drawing beautifully, which reflects very -great credit on the caretaker and ground committee. Several match games were played off, including the semi-final, of the Second Handicap Fours. Three games in the Champion Singles were also played, which now brings this competition near to a close. The following are the players and results' : —J. F. Pettie’s- Gold Medals. — Ashton, F. Harris, JBullock, Smith (skip) 25.’ Hamilton, Malir, F. Pettie, McMillan (skip) 22. McMillan started off by scoring a two on the- first head, and Smith equalised on the next. When five heads had been played the score was..in Smith’s favor by one point—s—4. On the- next threeheads McMillan got the- best of matters and put on another six points, which made the score 10 —4. Smith then exerted himself and scored a two and on the llt-h head got a five in andscored on the next four heads, bringing his total up- to- 25. Although McMillan scored from this out he did not mana-ge to- overtake his opponent, and had to suffer defeat by three points. The game was a good one throughout, both teams playing solidly. —Champion Singles.—
The final of the A and B Sections were completed- to-day when Eure and Paltridge, of the A section, had to- play off to decide who had to meet the winner of the B section, Paltridge winning rather easily by 23 to 13. Benzie and Maher had a game to play in the B section as also Witty and Benzie. The results were:—-Maher 20, Benzie 16. Benzie 22, Witty 18. Through Benzie losing to Malier other games will have to- be played between Ponsford, Kjme and Benzie, the winner then meeting Paltridge in the final. —Other Games. — Redstone, Robertson, Ivyme, Ponsford (skip) 25, -beat Cobb, Williams, Wootton, Simson (skip) 14. Colebrook, Townson, Corson, Crawford 19 heat Bolton, J. F. Pettie, Hookey, Bright 14. T. Leslie, Pasley, W. Pettie, W. J. Hennessy (skip) 19, beat R-. Johnston, Seymour, R. Crawford,* Barber {skip) 24. —Shield Matches.—
On Monday morning, at 10 o’clock, the first game in the Shield matches will be played. The draw to-night resulted in 'City and Kaiti having to meet in the first round and the winners in the morning play Whataupoko in the afternoon. The following is the draw: Kaiti —Kyme, McMillan, Craig, Ponsford (skip) plays City—L. Brown, Miller, W. Smith-, Benzie (skip). Kaiti —W. Pettie, Am-bridge, Eure, Bright (skip), plays City—Maher, Wootton, Robertson, Martin (skip). Any player ~not able to take part in the above match- must notify the secretary (W. J. Hennessy) on Saturday.
