VOLCANO’S SUDDEN OUTBREAK.
PILGRIMS’ AWFUL FATE.
OVERWHELMED WITH LAVA
The annual festival at the shrine on t.he summit of Asama-Yama, a lofty volcano in the island of Hondo, has been attended by a great disaster. Hundreds of pilgrims had ascended the mount, and were going through some of the ceremonies incidental to the festival, when, with terrible suddenness the volcano burst into a state of eruption.
Tlie outbreak was accompanied by a tremendous report, which was heard as far as Tokio, which is 90 miles away. Following this terrific explosion came an overwhelming shower of molten lava and ashes.
Rescue parties had the greatest difficulty in making their way to the summit" and on arrival there they found that manv lives had 'been lost. Most of the bodies had been completely shrivelled up by the hot lava, while those of other victims 5, had had all their clothes burned off them.
It is not yet possible to say how many perished.
