POVERTY BAY v. HAWKE’S BAY.

tPEE PEESS ASSOCIATION. J NAPIER, June 12. The following have been selected to represent Hawke’s. Bay in the football match against Poverty Bay at Gisborne on Saturday next: Full-back: Bainbridge. Threequarters: Israel, J. Downing, Harding. Five-eighths: Parohiwi and Russell. Half: W. Holder. Wing-forward: McCormick (Capt.b Forwards: Woods, Grant. A. Downing, O’Neill, Martin. Heney, Aitken. Emergency: J. Anderson. P.B. RUGBY UNION. MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The usual weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union was held last night, Mr H E. Maude presiding. There were also preset Messrs E. L. Maude, W. Howard, J. A. Eaton, A. R. Gatland, R. Somervell, and W. S. Coleman. On the receipt of a statement from the referee, in the Y.M.P.-Y.M.C.A. game on Saturday week last, the protest lodged by the. former club was disallowed.
The referee in last week’s game between Y.M.C.A. and United reported having had occasion to order a player of the former club eff the field for “too strenuous” play. After discussion on the. subject generally it was decided that the player in question, should be suspended for one week in which his club or clubs are engaged. At the same time the Union decided, that in; view of the fact that already this season two cases of rough play have been reported, any future cases of a similar nature -would be dealt with much more severely. A number of additional! players were passed for several of the 1 clubs in the different grades. In regard to the Thursday competition 1 , it was decided that the. matches continue as usual, an amendment to the effect of having a. representative practice match being lost. Discussing the representative match next Saturday, it was mentioned that as there was a strong probability of a large attendance, the livery stable-keepers, of the town should consider the question of providing conveyances to ply to and from the ground for hire. It was decided 1 to hold a special meeting of the Union on Wednesday evening to- consider final details in connection with the match. On the recommendation of the selector it was decided that H. Skillen should be appointed 1 captain of the team, and that the selected players should appear in the. regulation uniform of the Bay—scarlet jerseys and white knickers.

PUBLIC CANVASS TO BE MADE
Prior to the commencement of the committee l meeting, a general meeting of the Union was held, a good number attending. The Chairman outlined the object of the meeting to be for the purpose, of considering ways and means for sending a representative team to l Auckland, to play a challenge match for the Ranfurly Shield. After considerable discussion, it was decided that a committee be appointed to obtain subscriptions from the p-UDldc towards the cost, and the following committee was appointed: Members of the Rugby Union (ex officio), members of the Referees Association, club secretaries, Messrs J. P. Williams, C. Cole. F. Frericbs, H. M. Puflett, H. Skillen,, and H. Tocker It was further deckled that members of the committee report weekly as to the progress of the fund. In the discussion which took place on the subject, Mr. Waucliop expressed the opinion that the funds of the Uraon should be conserved, and anything that they had to spare should be put mw a ground, which they would’ undoubtedly need before long • The chairman referred to the selection of the local representatives to meet Hawke’s Bay, and said that theselector was to be congratulated on the result of his efforts, and-they must all hope that the team he bad selected would be successful in the contest. Considering the opportunities that Mr. Howard had had," his selection was a credit to him, but lie (the chairman) regretted that the notice had been so short, and consequently it had not been possible to get in touch with the subnnions.
THE ASSOCIATION GAME.
A meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Football Association was held last night, when it was arranged that the senior competition matches should continue as played in the first round. Y.M.C.A. meet Taruheru on the latter’s ground on Saturday next, and the County juniors meet High School.on the Polo ground. Referees—Y.M.C.A. v. Taruheru, Mr Hull or Mr Drake; County v. High School, Mr. Binnie.
