COSY CELLS.

BOOKS, LIGHT AND FLOWERS

During the course of a reply to a deputation last week the Queensland Home Secretary referred to the question of reforming inmates of penal establishments.

The policy of the Government, he said, was that- the treatmen of prisoners should not be so much in the direction of punishment as in that of reformation, They proposed to light the cells of the Brisbane Gaol with electricity. He had also arranged for additional furniture to be placed in a number of cells. This would consist of a locker, table, chair, and some pictures might be hung, and a vase for flowers put in. These cells would be allotted to firstcalss prisoners, who, by good conduct and industry, had indicated' that they deserved some amelioration of their punishment. Such would also be allowed to have a book and light for a- certain, time after the,, had been locked up at night.. All this was simply with a view to exercising a reformative influence.
