A DROWNING FATALITY. [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, July 11. A fisherman, named 1 Jas. Reed; and a woman and another man, went out on the harbor to-night in a small dinghy. 3 hey were capsized, and Reed was drowned, but the other two were rescued. Reed’s body has not yet been recovered, as the police are waiting for,a dense fog to lift before they commence operations. NAPIER TEMPERANCE CAMPAIGN NAPIER, July 11. A successful temperance campaign was brought to an enthusiastic close with a women’s crusade meeting tonight. On Sunday temperance messages were given in nearly every church in the Napier district. Mrs Barton, of Glasgow, and the Rev. W. J. Dawson, were the special campaign speakers. Canon Mayne. as chairman at the meetings, warmly advocated an aggressive temperance effort. RAILWAY RETIRING ALLOWANCES WELLINGTON, July 11. Retiring allowances amounting to £1216 13s were granted to seventeen contributors to the Railway Superannuation Board at its quarterly meeting yesterday. > Allowances to five widows and- six children of deceased contributors were opproved, involving an annual charge of £l6B, and £l2 13s 7d was ordered to be repaid to a member, representing the difference between benefits received and liis actual contributions. To 110 members of the service who have resigned or have retired from various causes, refunds of contributions were authorised, totalling £306 17s sd. FOUND DROWNED. The body of a man named' Robert Humphreys, a third-class passenger by the s.s. Corinthic, which arrived from London to-day, was seen in the harbor this evening, and when taken out of the water he was found to he drowned. Nothing is known about Humphreys at present, hut it is understood that he had intended to proceed toTaumaramii.

At a meeting to-night of headmasters and others interested in education, it was resolved to make arrangements for the celebration of Arbor Day this year with a view to continue its observance in future yeans; and it is further resolved to observe the day on August 9.
