TRAINING NOTES FROM TRENTHAM. {SPECIAL TO TIMES.! WELLINGTON, July 13. There was a heavy frost at Trentham. yesterday morning, but.it was beautiful for the track work. A large number of horses had arrived the previous evening, and-there were upwards of a hundred on the tracks. The whole of the work was done on the sand track, except the schooling of a few hurdle horses. * The best gallop of the morning was Peary (Julian) and Ainsdale (F. D. Jones) who ran four furlongs in 50£ seconds. This is the best time recorded on the sand 1 track since it has been in use. Ainsdale, who will carry the Karamu colors in the Trial Plate, was afterwards cantered once/round. . Another good' gallop was that in which Epsom Lass- (Gray) easily held Te Waharoa (R. Barlow) safe, over half a mile, run in 52sec. Epsom Lass is on her first visit to Trentham. She is a nice little mare by Hotchkiss, and a half-sister to that useful performer, Lady Menschikoff. She ran fairly well last season, but her only victory appears to have been when she beat a big field in the Papakura Cup. It is worthy of note that when she last started at Ellerslie in June she had 10st 51b in the Ranfurly Welter, and Gold Circle 9st 41b. Now, (in the Miramar Handi-cap-at'Trentham on Saturday), Gold
Circle will have to carry lOst 11b and Epsom Lass only 9st. It looks as if latter has been, exceptionally well treated. , „. ■ ~,, Kopek (Murtagli) and Ivina (Traill), ran five furlongs together in lmin. 5 1-5 secs. Similar time was recorded over the same distance by John, St. Gate and Taft. The first named seems to be well fitted to stand tho Winter Hurdles on Saturday. •• . _ __ / St, Petersburg (Traill) and Te Ivahurangi (Murtagh) took over a second longer to cover five furlongs. Dogger Bank pleased watchers by getting to the end of 0 furlongs in lmin 18sec. Wauchope (Gray) jumped off at the. mile post and hit out in such a free and easy manner that he scarcely appeared to be going against time, but the watch showed lmin 40iseo for the last seven furlongs; a most attractive gallop. ' Electrakoff (Gray) sprinted down the straight and then went round at a good sound pace. The steeplechase favorite Paritutu (T. Pine), got over a mile in lmin 57sec without any trouble. Hoanga, Tyrannic, Eiya, North East, Waiputere, Te Ru, St. Albert, Kremlin, Don Quex, Lovell, Golden Water, Captain Jingle, and a large number of other jumpers also did useful work on the sand. . Ribstone Pippin, and Shlopm. who had been schooled over the big fences on Wednesday, did a slow round together on the sand, and were then taken on to the course proper to have another attempt over three of the big fences. On this occasion L. Hill, of the Porirua stable rode Ribstone Pippin, and Murtagh had the mount on the hunter. Salopin jumped' well and Ribstone Pippin’s display was a distinct improvement on that of the previous morning, though he was slow in negotiating the sod wall. Hill will now have the mount on the Australian-bred gelding in the Hack, and Hunter’s .Steeplechase. Te Arai- is considered an unlikely starter in the steeples. Longner (N. ‘Campbell), jumped a couple of hurdles in good style. Compass (Flynn), Torbelle (Traill), and Fond Memory were associated in a round over five hurdles. Compass gave a good display, and was much too fast for the other two.
Boilin’ (Julian), jumped one of the schooling hurdles rather carefully, End then traversed a round of the sand track.
Napper (Julian) was sent over a couple of hurdles down the back, and no fault could be found with his style of jumping. St. Bill, with a light boy in the saddle, was tried over one of the schooling fences. He ran off at the first attempt but afterwards cleared it well, and then went once round on the sand.
Xavier (A. McConnon), and Egypt (Crawford), were companions over six of the schooling hurdles. Egypt- *ran away from his companion at the start and . jumped splendidly, all the way. Xavier’s display was not*so good. Sylvia Maid (Watson) negotiated several hurdle? in pleasing style without a companion, Corazon. one of) the favorites for the Grand National Steeples, is now located at Trentham, and is in the pink of condition. An idea prevails in some quarters that list 101 b will prove too much for the Great Northern winner, but the fact that he stands nearly 16 hands and is so solidly built is an argument against that theory. Besides, at Hastings last year, he carried list 131 b to victory in. a mile and three-quarter hurdle race, and covered the distance in 3min 10 4-osec. Among the defeated horses was Land o’ Nod (9st), who had won at Ashhurst- a- couple of days before in fast time. *"
