CHESS.

GISBORNE v. WAIROA.

A DRAWN MATCH

The telephone chess match between the Gisborne and Wairoa Chess Clubs, which began on the previous Saturday, was concluded on Saturday night, the result being a draw with 21 points each. Gisborne. Wairoa. 1. J. W. Witty... 0 v. O. Jonson 1 2. H. A. King... 1 v. W. F. Shaw 1 3. J. H. Bull ... 1 v. H. H. Carr 0 4. P. Andrew ... 1 v. L. Shaw ... 0 5. C. Blackburn v 0 v. H. Brown... 1 2i 21 At No. 1 board (“Muzio Gambit”) the previous Saturday, a good game was developing, when Witty made a blunder, and was mated next move. At No. 2 (“Centre Gambit”) a free exchange of pieces resulted in a draw on the 41st move.

No. 5 (“Scotch Opening”) was a quiet, steady game, in which pawn-play predominated. Brown gradually forced his pawns through, and Blackburn resigned at the 54th move. This left Wairoa 21 points to Gisborne’s 1, and much interest was centred on 3 and 4 boards.

No. 4 (“Petroff’s Defence”) was the liveliest game of the match. Shaw sacrificed a knight early in the game and attacked vigorously. Andrew defended himself successfully, and the attack failing at the 39th move Shaw resigned at the 41st. No. 3 (“Centre Counter Gambit”). — This was the 1 last game to finish, and after a tough struggle resulted in a win for Bull, which saved Gisborne from defeat. Bull offered a draw at the supper adjournment, which Carr declined ; later on he offered to accept the draw, but Bull declined, and close on midnight black’s position was hopeless, and he resigned on the 47t'h move.. A pleasant match concluded with a vote of thanks to the umpires, Messrs. Crawford, Carr, Faram, Rowley, and Kennedy; and to the operator, Mr. Gedye.
