GOLF.
THE LOCAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
-FINAL TO BE PLAYED TO-
MORROW
Tha final of the Poverty Bay . Golf Club’s championship tournament will be fought out to-morrow between F. H. W. Traill and G. W. Wiilock on the local links. The match should! prove a close and interesting one, and it is quite certain that the pair will be followed round by a large number of spectators. Both claimants for the title have a large number of supporters, who favor the chances of their man, 'and it would be a rash prophet who would predict which is to have the honor of holding the coveted title until next year. Wiilock is an ex-champion of the Club, having annexed the honor the season before last from Pare Keiha, who until that year had held undisputed possession of the title for several seasons. On that’occasion Wiilock proved his ability by quite outplaying the redoubtable veteran, than whom there
are few! better match players in this part of the Island. Wiilock, who isi a player of the younger generation, adopts an upright swung in driving, and when on his game is capable of journeying round the links somewhere about 8 A ;
Traill has not yet had the distinction of carrying off the championship, but has always been acknowledged to be one of the most capable players in the Club. This year he has displayed the best form he has ever shown, since throwing in this lot with the Poverty-Bay Club, and; in defeating G. M. Dodgshun in tho. semifinal he gave a taste, of his capabilities. Traill broke the record for the local links with a score of 7S about a month ago, and has since had the advantage of competing in the New Zealand championship meeting at Wanganui. He was drawn to meet Kurupo Tareha, the Hawke’s Bay crack, in. the first round of the Amateur Championship, and was leading right up to the 15th green. Tareha here put in some, sensational work, and took the next two holes in under bogey, thus defeating tlie Gisborne man by 2 and 1. The match to-morrow will be a true test as to which is the better man, as it will consist of 36 holes. The first round will commence at noon, and the second at 2.30 p.m. It is to be hoped that the weather conditions will be favorable, in which case the match should provide a first-class exposition of the game.
