HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION.

EXTENSION 05* PRESENT BUILDING.

ERECTION IN AVHITE PINE REFUSED.

The secretary of the Hospital Board applied to the Borough Council lastevening, for a permit for building an extension, in white pine, to one of the present hospital wards. The Engineer, as the building might be sold when the new hospital is completed, recommended the work should be clone in kauri or rimu. He advised the Council to refuse the application, as it was against the by-law to erect a building in white pine. Cr. Collins explained that it was only a temporary building, and would mean a saving of £2OO to the Board if it was erected in white pine. He moved that permission be granted to erect the building. Cr. Smith said he would oppose the application on the grounds mentioned by the Engineer. The difference between the cost of white pine and rimu would only be about £4O. They were endeavoring to keep white pine out of the district owing to the borer, which attacked other timber sooner or later, where the difference came in in the price of the timber. He would oppose the motion, as they should maintain their by-laws.

Cr. Bright said the Engineer’s opinion was against it and the by-law was against it, therefore he would oppose the proposal. The Mayor said that the Council would not object to the Board erecting the building in rimu. He thought itwould be a great mistake to go against the Engineer’s recommendation. The Council would like to meet the Board in-- the matter.

Ci’. Collins said that as the building was only temporary it would mean saving the’Board a great deal if it was "erected in white pine. It was to effect , a saving that the Board approached the Council, as they had been put- to considerable expense in other directions. Crs. AVildish and Sawyer ..were also against granting the application, and Cr. Collins withdrew his motion. It was decided, however, to inform the Board there would be no objection to the addition being made in rimu.
