The Radio Office (Wellington) advised that the s.s. Tainui was within wireless range last night. The performance of me cantata, “Esther, the Beautiful Queen,” by St. Andrew’s Church Choir, to-morrow night, should provide a musical treat. The work is a most attractive one, and the choir have been rehearsing the choruses diligently for some months past. A strong cast of soloists lias been secured, and altogether the entertainment should come up to the choir’s highest standard. Mr. H. G. McClyniont will act as conductor.

According to a cable from Sydney, the well-known steeplechase horse Graf_ nax has died from blood-poisoning, contracted as the result of an accident at the last meeting at Caulfield.

At the Haiti School to-day, the treeplanting ceremony, postponed sine© Arbor Day owing to unsuitable weather will' be conducted b.v the children. Dr. W. P Porter has kindly consented to deliver an appropriate address. An entertainment of a rather novel character, .-ini the shape of a “Sunday School Evening,” is to bo given in the Baptint Tabernacle this evening, commencing at 7.45 p.m. sharp. A most attractive programme has been arranged, and a very largo attendance of parents and friends of the children is anticipated. A meeting of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Band of Hope will he held in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom this evening, commencing at 7 p.m. The annual meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club takes place this evening in the Gisborne Hotel, when the report and balance-sheet will be received and the election of officers and other business will be transacted.

A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that_Mr Chow S. Lanchu, His Imperial Chinese Majesty s Consul for New Zealand, arrived in Wellington from Pekin via Australia hv the Ulimaroa last night. He will take up his residence at the Consulate, where the former consul, Mr Hwang, resided, and will commence his official duties next Wednesday.
