HERMIT OF NEW YORK.
SPANIARD LIVES THIRTY YEARS SHUTX>FF FROM THE WORLD. The death is announced of Mr Manuel Martinez, a wealthy Spaniard of high rank, who had lived like a hermit for thirty years'* amid the hurry and scurry of New York Broadway, entirely cut off from the. world. ■ ' He was in his-ninetieth year, and had immured! himself in Broadway Central Hotel to devote his declining years to the study of philosophy. His father was Don Ramon Martinez v Soldero, a wealthy Spaniard, living at Pontevedra, in Northern Spain, where Manuel was born. Manuel entered a monastry against 'his will, but remained there studying for the priesthood until his father died. \ Then he abandoned the Church and spent thirty years travelling about the world. During this time he developed strong anti-Church views, becoming obsessed, said the “Standard,” with the idea that religion everywhere was trampling on the .people.
