The ordinary monthly jneeting of the High School Board of Governors was held in the offices of Messrs. Nolan and Sheet yesterday. The following were nresent:—Messrs. J. W. Nolan (cl. airman), J. R. Kirk, J. W. Bright, F. Matthews, and J. Coleman. The Assistant Inspector-Gen oral of Schools, Dr. A. J. Anderson, repirted that generally the work of the .>cl 00l appeared to him to he capably coidueted. A good spirit of industry was cbservable, and loyal and effective service was given by the teachers in the work entrusted to them. Herironce was also made to the interest talcen in the school games. Mr. Nolan remarked that the report was very satisfactory, and moved that it should be received.—Carried.
Mrs. Reeve wrote enclosing a copy of a resolution passed unanimously at a meeting of women held on September 22nd, at which Professor Mills delivered a lecture on the subject of “Education.” The resolution was as follows: “That this meeting of women, recognising the importance of women taking their part in the management of all institutions where women and girls are concerned, would respectfully call the attention of the Governors of the Gisborne High School for boys and girls to the fact that there is no woman at present sitting on the governing board. AVe would suggest that it would be to the advantage of the gills and women of the school that one or more women should be invited to co-operate with the Governors, and would earnestly beg the governing body at the next, two vacancies of the Board to give this matter their serious consideration.”
Mr. Nolan pointed out that this matter did not come within the province of the Board, and he suggested that Mrs. Reeve be written to to that effect. This was agreed to. A letter from the Rev. W. Grant regarding the school bath at the Gisborne School set out a scale of alternative charges at which the use of the bath for boys attending the High School could be secured. After some slight discussion it was agreed, on the motion of Mr. Bright, to write to the Borough Council regarding the matter. The schoolmaster, Mr A. R.. Gat-land, reported that the 101 l number now stood at 127, of which S 6 were boys and 47 girls. When allowance was made for sickness the average at'.endance (90 per cent, of the roll number) must be considered very satisfactory. The report was adopted. Mr. A. Forde Matthews, on behalf of the visiting committee, a ported having visited the school and f lining everything satisfactory. The principal had ‘pointed out that he intended asking permission to lay down an asphalt tennis court in front of the school. With regard to the school house, the report went on to state that the match lining in the outbuilding recently erected was not satisfactory, and the windows were badly fitted. In the house additions the * match lining showed shrinkage, and in one room the lining was not put on straight, and appeared unsightly. The floors were unsatisfactory, showing shrinkage between some of the boards, and other defects were visible. There was no ventilation other than that afforded by the door. In places the paper was not matched, and the painting on the roof did not match the older portion. On the motion of the chairman, Messrs. Bright, Coleman, and Matthews were appointed to confer with the architect on this subject. Mr. A. J. Penlington applied for and was granted four days leave of absence in November.
