EAST COAST RABBIT BOARD.

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING

The East Coast Rabbit Board met on Saturday. Present: Messrs., E. M. Hutchinson, W. Ross, J. C. Field, and W. Hennessy (secretary). Inspector McGill, of Opotiko, reported that he had made a thorough inspection of his district, and found things very satisfactory right through. All the back country, Rangit-aiki, right down to Tarawera, was very clean. One of Inspector Turner’s men had been doing good work at Tarawera. The country about Galatea, Te Whaiti, and Waihou was cleaner than ever it was. The men at Te Toko were catching an average of three a day. The Ruatoki men were doing good work, and if they kept on there would not l>e much left in a montli or two. The men that were working between Whakatane and Matata had caught 17 rabbits, and they thought they had most of them caught at Whakatane end, and are shifting camp towards Matata. The men at Opotiki had not caught any since last report. Inspector Turner, Wairoa, reported that he found matters satisfactory on Mohaka native block, although more rabbits had been caught than he anticipated. He found fresh traces on two different parts of the block, and had poison laid. Two had been caught in the vicinity of where lie saw truces. A rabbit was started at the extreme end of the Tutaekuri block, which was caught. He was of the opinion that these rabbits came over the Waihua river from Mohaka. The inspector asked the Board to, have a whare erected on the. Tutaekuri block, as the iron were- at present working under d Utilities. He suggested removing tho gates from the Mohaka and Waikaretaheke rivers.

An application from Mr. W. King for a position as rabbiter was referred to the Inspector.
