SAVED FROM DROWNING.
i A PECULIAR ACCIDENT. ! CHILD PENNED IN A TUB OF WATER. [.SPECIAL 10 TIiIES.J AUCKLAND, Oct. 23. A peculiar accident, which nearly resulted in the death of a small child, occurred shortly after noon yesterday near the new Trades Hall, which is in course of erection in Upper Hobson Street. A gentleman who was on his way home from church noticed a piece of timber lying on the footpath near the building, and lifted it out of the way towards the fence. Looking over the latter he saw a large tub of water, such as is used by plasterers, with the legs of a child sticking out of it. Going closer he found that the child was submerged to the knees, and that a section of beam or girder, some 18 inches long, was lying across the tub, pinning the child down. He lifted the girder away with some difficulty and pulled the child out. It proved to be a little girl, some three years .of age. She was almost black in the face, bub, after a minute or two the little one came round, and was handed over to its mother, who was summoned by another child. Apparently 'the two children, who live quite close to the hall, were playing, around the building, when one fell into the tub, pulling over the girder, which must have’’been leaning on the edge. But for the passer-by happening to look over the fence assistance would have arrived too late to save the child from drowning.
