ALLEGED THEFT.

CHARGE OF STEALING FIVE SHILLINGS.

MAN ENTERS LADIES’ ROOM BY MISTAKE.

Harold Jarmey Wilson was charged before Messrs Wm. Pettie ana J. warren, J.’sP. at the Police Court yesterday morning with on the previous evening,' stolen ss, the property ol Emily Moore. Detective Mitchell appeared tor * the police, and the accused conducted his own case. Emily Moore, a single woman, stated that she resided at 161 Grey Street and occupied a room with Miss Reid On Tuesday evening, when she. went ta bed.she hung her purse containing 5s on the bedpost. The door was closed, but not locked, and early in the morning she heard Miss Reid ordering accused out of the room. He had no hat, boots or coat ou, and she also told him to go out of the room. She raised the alarm, and on examining her purse found it was empty. There would be do possibility of accused mistaking, the room.

Illy Reid gave similar evidence. She liad a purse at the end of the bed containing £35. When she ordered accused out of the room he said lie had made a mistake. Detective Mitchell said that he arrested accused, who was then under the influence of liquor. He denied taking any money from the room. The accused said he slept in the front room of the house that night, and entered the ladies’ room by mistake. He was absolutely innocent of the charge of theft. The Bench said there was insufficient evidence to sustain the charge of theft, and discharged accused.
