ASHBURTON’S DISPLAY

(Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Nov. 1

The Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s thirty-fourth annual show was opened to-day, in fine but hot weather. The entries are higher than last year, though not up to the record, and competition is keen in many of the sheep and horse classes. Taken generally the display of stock is distinctly meritorious, though . all of it will not be on the grounds till to-mor-row. MANAWATU SHOW. PALMERSTON N., Nov. 1. The Manawatu A. and P. Show opened to-day, in fine but windy weather. The attendance, as usual on the first day, was not large. Judging was confined to the home industries and pigs. There were not numerous entries in the latter section, but the quality was remarkably good, particularly Berkshires and Yorkshires. Championship awards were as follows:—Berkshire boar, J. H. Sellars, Okaiawa; sow, Porirua Mental Hospital; middle and small Yorkshire boar, T. J. Small, Kairanga; sow, W. Saunderson, Palmerston; large Yorkshire boar, T. J. Small, Kairanga; large black Devons boar and sow, E. Weekes, Awapuni. Numerous competitions were won by Mr. D. Donoghue, Wellington. The best gent, rider was Alex. Mitchell, Manaia; bareback rider, D. A. Bennett, Awahuri; driving, H. Roberts, Feilding; ladies’ pony turnout, Mrs. Goring Johnston; harness horse, pace or style, R. T. Sanson; maiden hunters, Ernest Short 1, C.' E. Levett 2. Lord Islington officially opens the Show to-morrow.
