COMPENSATION.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. In the compensation case, Coverdale v. City Council, in connection with land taken for street widening, the Court awarded £1250. DEFENCE OFFICERS. Captains Hamilton, McArthur, Onslow, and Maidlow, and Lieut. Wallingford, arrived here to-day from England to join the defence force. AUCKLAND CRICKET COACH. Mr. G. J. Thornton arrived by the Athenic. He . goes to Auckland tomorrow as coach to the Cricket Association. He thinks the English team good all round, and that it will pull safely through the tests. It could have been improved, but not to a great extent. ARSON CHARGE. Henry Edward Whiteman and Leonard Edwards pleaded guilty at the Police Court to wilfully setting fire to a: whare at Wallaceville, and breaking, entering, and stealing goods valued at £ll 8s 6d. They were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Ban was allowed. The police gave the pnsoners a good character. A GRAIN CASE. TIMARU, Nov. 1. In a suit D. C. Turnbull and Co., grain merchants, of Timaru, v. F. MacManomin Ell-erslie, Auckland, claim lor £47 9s sd, value of a consignment of oats sold through one, Kohn, -a grain broker of Auckland, it came out that the defendant had paid' Kohn for the oats before he received them. Plaintiff stated he shipped to defendant, not to Kohn. In fact, Kohn had died before they were shipped. Counsel for the defendant said that, after seeing the plaintiff’s books he advised ai settlement. It was unfortunate that defendant should have to pay twice. Judgment was for the plaintiff.
