NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By “Toucher.”)
The show and races, as was only to be expected, detracted from the attractiveness of bowls last week, and the attendance at the rinks of both local chubs suffered i.n consequence. During this week the Gisborne Club have made steady progress with their Handicap Pairs competition, while the Turawganui Club made a commencement on Thursday with their Cope Feathers competition. The annual report of the Northern Bowling Association, which was presented at the annual meeting _of the Association, is to hand. There is. nothing therein contained of a startling nature.
The Dunedin Centre of the New Zealand Bowling Association has discussed the question of amalgamation with the N.8.A., but decided to defer final decision until Christmas.
A committee meeting of the Kelburne Ladies’ Bowling Club was held last Wednesday afternoon says the “Dominion.” Mr C. A. Marquis was elected hon. secretary. The prospects for
a successful season are very promising. The membership list is rapidly filling ‘ and seven new members were elected. : Mrs Church, vice-president, is presenting a trophy for a single handicap competition. A trip to Wanganui is also under consideration and everything ; points to the ladies having a very busy season. At a meeting of the Council of the Northern Bowling Association last Wednesday evening a letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Association, the South Island body, stating that at a meeting of the association it had been decided to jiostpone consideration of the question of amalgamation with the N.Z.A. until tournament time, when it would be possible to ascertain the opinion of bowlers on the subject. The chairman (Mr Keith) stated that it would ■ not be wise to discuss the proposal at j present, and at his suggestion the let- ! ter was received merely. A communication was received by the ! Council of the N.B.A. at its last meeting from a team of Auckland bowlers to the effect that they wished to play a team of six rinks selected from members of the Council of the N.8.A., and also a team from members of the Wellington City an suburban clubs about January IS or 20. It was decided to accept the challenge on behalf of the N.B.A. Arrangements for the matches in Wellington were left in the hands of the tournament Entertainment Commit-"t-60. The Queensland Bowling Association, at its monthly delegate meeting decided upon the programme of events for the Australian Bowling Carnival to be held in Brisbane at Christmas. The actual playing dates were fixed for December 26, 1911, to January 2, 1912, and the events are :—Single-Handed Championship of Australia, 21 points up for trophies valued at—first £25, second £lO, third £5, foui'th £3 j entrance fee 10s ; final game to be 31 up. permits for inter-club matches, in the | Rink Championship of Australia, 25 j ends, for trophies valued at—first £l6, ! second £8; entrance fee £1 per rink. Commonwealth Four-rink Tournament, ; for trophies valued at £SO Bs, each of the 16 players in the winning rink to receive a trophy valued at £3 3s j entrance free. Entries close on December 14 at noon. An Executive Committe consisting of the following members of the Northern Bowling Association has been appointe to deal with minor matters, including intervals between meetings of the council : —The president, the secretary, Coli onel Collins, Messrs Veitch, Bi unskill, Bary, and Bush.
N.B.A. TOURNAMENT. The following programme has been approved by the Council of the Northern Bowling Association for the tournaj meat to be held under the auspices of the association on Monday, January 8, 1912, and succeeding days:— —Champion Rink.—

Three games will be played on Monday, three on Tuesday, and three oh Wednesday. Winners of sections and those who tie in sections will be divided into sections of four, and three games of 21 heads 1 will be played on Tulirsday. No sec- * tion ties will be played. I Winners of sections and those who tie 1 in sections will play off (sudden death) ! for first and second prize, and banner and shield. These semi-final matches will be played on Friday, and the final on Saturday. —Third Prize. — For rinks defeated in Champion Rink games on Thursday and Friday. Entries will be divided into sections of four, and three games of 16 ends wil Hie played. No section ties will be played. The matches will be arranged for Tulirsday and Friday, and the final (of 21 heads) for Saturday. It will be noticed that the programme contains rink games only, and. that pairs are done away with. . Assuming that the number of rink entries will be about 100, the earliest that any player can be put out of full rink play will be Thursday night. —Committees.—, It was decided that the Entertainment Committee . for the tournament consist of Messrs Hill, . Cohen, Haybittle and Townsend, with at least one representative from each of the city and suburban clubs. The following Tournament Committee was appointed : —Colonel Collins, Messrs Br unskill, Kelly, Bush and Prince, with the president and secretary of the association as ex officio members. As can be ascertained by the foregoing, the pairs have been struck out, and a consolation fours inserted. The wisdom of such a procedure is questioned. It is not so very long ago when champion singles were in vogue, and they were wiped out. Now the pairs are to go. On this subject “Wrong Bras,” in the “Free Lance,” gives utterance to his thoughts, with no uncertain voice. He says:—“The Council of the Northern Bowling Association have made a very unpopular experiment in eliminating Pairs from the tournament programme, and übstituting a Consolation Rink Match. There is growling all round. In fact, the Council have never recognised the favor in which Pairs matches are held. They have treated them merely as a kind of side-show, or consolation event. J And now they are struck out altogether. It is quite different with the Southern Association. There the Pairs are always a great championship event, and never fail to furnish a series of exciting struggles. Up here in the North the people who are skips always by a kind of divine right rule the roost, and regulate things to their own liking. Rinks, and nothing but rinks will suit them. Well, Consolation Rinks will be found to be a poor and mean substitute for the Pairs. Nous verrons.”
