AN OTAGO CENTRAL CANDIDATE

(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Nov. 4. Mr John Bennetts, one,of the ministerial candidates for Otago Central electorate, addressed a large meeting of electors at Outram on Friday evening. Ho .advocated the opening up of land on the leasehold system, with the right of purchase, limitation of freehold areas, and more rapid construction of light lines to open up the back country. He suggested that on co-opera-tive railway works contracts should be let to men at prices computed by the engineer, and the men allowed to make as much as they could. He spoke at some length about- the fruit industry, in which he had long been interested, and pointed out that it was not represented in Parliament. He. drew attention to the possibility of its enormous expansion. He advocated retention and the increase of protective duties on fruit. Local bodies, he considered, should liave more power in the management of tlicir own affairs. Pie was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address and the straight-forward way he answered questions. STRATFORD, Nov. 4. Mr J. B. liine gave his opening addresses last night in the Town Hall to a largo meeting. The candidate maintained the stand he had taken in the House in criticising the Government. He declared himself in favor of a bare majority on all licensing issues. The meeting was sympathetic, and applause was frequent. A resolution of tlianks to the candidate, and that in the opinion of the meeting the time had arrived when the Dominion should have a change of Government, was carried.”
