The Waterside Workers’ Union has requested the deep-water shipping companies to increase the rate of pay of men employed handling cargo in freezing chambers from Is 6d per hour to 2s per Hour. They also asK that men sent away on Dig ships to work bar harbor ports t get an increase from 10s to 12s per day, including Sundays, as well as board on the ships while away from pm ' tramway demands. The Conciliation Council is considering in committee to-day the tramway employees’ demands. Tho Commissioner is of opinion that there are good prospects of a settlement satisfactory to both sides. ,INCOME TAX CASE. WELLINGTON, Nov. 7.

An interesting special case came before Mr Justice Chapman to-day regarding the payment of income by the ALu tig way Estate and Land Company. The points for decision are : (1) Whether a person who lias been assessed for income tax by the Commissioner of Taxes, and who has paid nndor protest the amount of that assessment, but has not taken proceedings by way of objection, and appeal in accordance with section 22 of the Land and Income Assessment Act, can take proceedings in tho Supreme Court for the recovery °f the tax so paid, on the ground that the assessment was excessive? (2) Whether, if such proceedings are allowable, tliev’ can be taken against the Commissioner of Taxes? The case is proceeding. POULTRY CONFERENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 7. The New Zealand Poultry Conference opened here this morning, Mr H. P. Harvey (Dunedin) presiding. The delegates were accorded a civic reception. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. At the Supreme Court a Maori, Kiwi ri Waipana, for thirteen separate offences of forgery at Pukekohe, received 1 a sentence of two years’ reformative treatment. Samuel Ford, committed at Inglewood for issuing valueless cheques, was sentenced to One year’s imprisonment-. James McLean Clark, on six charges c-f theft, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment oil each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. COMPENSATION CLAIM. DUNEDIN, Nov. 7.

In the Arbitration Court, compensation was claimed on behalf of Win. Barton, for injuries sustained while employed by Tlios. Lama, sawmiller, at Catlins, by which the plaintiff lost the sight of one eye. Mr O’Regan appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Hay for defendant. This is a test ease. Plaintiff was knocking the ‘-burrs” off an axe with a cold chisel, when a piece of. metal flew off, causing the injury stated. Decision was reserved. GOVERNOR VISITS INDUSTRIAL. EXHIBITION. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 7. The Governor and Lady Islington visited the Industrial Exhibition to-day and were obviously much impressed with both the quality of the exhibits and the essentially local and industrial character of the displays. His Excellency briefly addressed a number of school children. HOME FOR CONSUMPTIVES. The Coronation memorial fund to defray the cost for the erection and equipment of a home for chronic consumi>tives, has closed with a total of £44/0 ■ lOd. but some outstanding subscriptions are still to come in. The Government subsidy of 24s in the £ will bring the total to £9831. To-day the Mayor received a very handsome contribution of £353 12'S from Green Masons, North Canterbury. PICKPOCKETS AT WORK.

A gang of Australian pickpockets 7 s alleged to be operating amongst the holiday crowds at present in town, and four persons were before the Court today on charges of theft of money from the person, and were remanded.
